About

# Microgreens answers you can check for yourself.

Most of what is published about selling microgreens is confident and unsourced. It reads authoritatively, it cannot be verified, and it is often wrong in a way that costs a grower money. This site exists to answer the same questions with the primary text attached, the deciding agency named, and the date the answer was checked.

274

agencies named across the guides, with what each one does and does not decide

1077

distinct government and university sources cited, every one opened and read

60

guides carrying the date they were last verified

## How a guide gets made

Every guide answers the same questions in the same order, so states can be compared directly rather than read one at a time. That is the part nobody else has built.

1. Step 1

    The same questions, every jurisdiction

A fixed set covering licensing, the raw-versus-cut line, water, labeling, tax, zoning, insurance and each sales channel. Nothing is skipped because a state makes it hard to find.

2. Step 2

    Primary sources only

Statutes, regulations and agency publications, opened and read. Not a summary of a summary, and never a content farm repeating a figure nobody traced.

3. Step 3

    Checked against the agency

The office that decides is identified by name, along with what it does not decide, so a reader phones the right desk with the right question.

4. Step 4

    Gaps reported as gaps

Where a state publishes nothing, the guide says so. That is often the most useful sentence on the page, because it stops a grower hunting for an answer that does not exist.

5. Step 5

    Dated, and rechecked

The verified date goes on the page. When a rule moves, the page moves with it.

## What this site holds itself to

The source sits next to the claim

A regulatory statement carries the text it came from, with its section number and a link, so you can read the original rather than take a summary of it on trust.

Every page carries the date it was checked

Rules change on their own schedule. A page that hides its age is asking you to trust it further than it deserves, so the date is on the page and the page gets rechecked.

The right desk is named, and so is the wrong one

Each guide names the office that actually decides, and the offices that do not. Most wasted phone calls are to a real agency with no authority over the question.

The unanswered question gets named

Where no source resolves something, the page says so and names the office to ask, instead of filling the gap with a confident guess. Several guides end on an open question because the state genuinely has not answered it.

## Who writes it

The guides are researched and written by Cal Hewitt, who has grown and individually written up nineteen microgreen varieties and sold the crop commercially for a period, and is not selling at present. Twenty years as a business analyst before that is why operating costs get calculated with the assumptions shown rather than waved away.

That experience shapes the growing guidance and keeps the regulatory work grounded in what a real operation actually does. It does not replace the source. Someone can have grown and sold a crop and still not be the office that interprets a current rule for your facts, which is exactly why every page names that office instead.

## Where to start

- [Selling legally, state by state](https://microgreensguru.com/selling-microgreens/): 52 states and 8 federal guides, each naming the agency that decides.
- [Growing microgreens](https://microgreensguru.com/grow-microgreens/): Trays, medium, light, water and harvest, from crops actually grown.
- [The variety directory](https://microgreensguru.com/microgreen-types/): What each variety is like to grow, and what usually goes wrong with it.
- [Equipment reviews](https://microgreensguru.com/product-reviews/): Researched not bench-tested, and most of them conclude you should buy less.
- [Feeding animals](https://microgreensguru.com/microgreens-for-animals/): Species by species, with the evidence named and the gaps named too.
- [Send a correction](https://microgreensguru.com/contact/): A page that is wrong about a licensing rule is worse than no page.
