Animals and microgreens

# Feeding microgreens to animals

Which microgreens are safe for reptiles, chickens, rabbits and other animals, which are not, and what the evidence actually says rather than what a forum thread claims.

- [Can Alpacas and Llamas Eat Microgreens?](https://microgreensguru.com/microgreens-for-animals/alpacas-and-llamas/): It would take 50 to 90 trays to supply one alpaca's dry matter for a single day, and up to 250 for a llama. That settles the feed question, and leaves identity and suddenness as the only real risks.
- [Can Chinchillas and Rats Eat Microgreens?](https://microgreensguru.com/microgreens-for-animals/chinchillas-and-rats/): One median tray is 83 to 145 days of everything a pet rat is allowed outside its pellet. A chinchilla's entire daily fresh allowance is about a teaspoon, and its own veterinary sources disagree about whether to give it at all.
- [Can Ducks and Quail Eat Microgreens?](https://microgreensguru.com/microgreens-for-animals/ducks-and-quail/): Nothing is established. No source addresses any named crop as a microgreen fed to either bird, the 10 percent chicken scrap ceiling carries no duck or quail authority, and ducklings need nearly double the niacin a chick does.
- [Can Ferrets Eat Microgreens?](https://microgreensguru.com/microgreens-for-animals/ferrets/): No. Two veterinary sources say avoid vegetables outright, and compared on a dry basis a microgreen carries up to seven times the fiber a ferret diet is meant to contain.
- [Can Goats and Sheep Eat Microgreens?](https://microgreensguru.com/microgreens-for-animals/goats-and-sheep/): Nothing is established for either animal. And the two must not be fed alike: the copper a goat requires sits inside the range that poisons a lamb, which is why one mineral program cannot serve both.
- [Can You Gut-Load Feeder Insects With Microgreens?](https://microgreensguru.com/microgreens-for-animals/feeder-insects/): You can feed them to insects. You cannot deliver calcium that way, and calcium is the entire reason gut-loading exists. A cricket needs a 13-fold ratio change, and the best published gut-load managed three to four.
- [Can Bearded Dragons Eat Microgreens?](https://microgreensguru.com/microgreens-for-animals/bearded-dragons/): Probably, as part of the salad. No study has fed a microgreen to a bearded dragon, the one vet-reviewed teaspoon dose has nothing behind it, and calcium to phosphorus is unmeasured for most crops.
- [Can Cats Eat Microgreens?](https://microgreensguru.com/microgreens-for-animals/cats/): Some yes, four unsafe. Parsley is ASPCA-listed toxic to cats and the alliums have a published feline dose, while greens are enrichment for a cat rather than nutrition.
- [Can Chickens Eat Microgreens?](https://microgreensguru.com/microgreens-for-animals/chickens/): Yes, as a treat inside the 10 percent ceiling Cornell sets for all scraps combined. Not one microgreen crop has a chicken-specific safety study behind it, and the 15 percent figure in circulation is unsourced.
- [Can Dogs Eat Microgreens?](https://microgreensguru.com/microgreens-for-animals/dogs/): Five groups of these crops are unsafe for dogs with sources, including buckwheat and parsley, which almost nobody names. The sunflower clearance people cite is a different species.
- [Can Guinea Pigs Eat Microgreens?](https://microgreensguru.com/microgreens-for-animals/guinea-pigs/): The one pet where microgreens have a real nutritional case, and it still does not hold. Merck needs 10 mg of vitamin C per kg per day; USDA measured 20.4 to 147 mg per 100 g across 25 microgreens.
- [Can Hamsters Eat Microgreens?](https://microgreensguru.com/microgreens-for-animals/hamsters/): A teaspoon a day for a dwarf and a teaspoon or two for hamsters generally, inside a 10 percent ceiling. Plus the hoarding problem nobody warns you about, which is the real risk with wet food.
- [Can Horses Eat Microgreens?](https://microgreensguru.com/microgreens-for-animals/horses/): Probably harmless in a handful, and pointless at any scale that matters. A 500 kg horse eats around 10 kg of dry matter a day and a 1020 tray yields ounces of mostly water.
- [Can Parrots and Pet Birds Eat Microgreens?](https://microgreensguru.com/microgreens-for-animals/parrots-and-pet-birds/): Yes, as part of the fresh food. But the hazard on your worktop is avocado, where 8.7 g of mashed fruit killed a budgerigar within 48 hours, and no microgreen has an avian dose at all.
- [Can Rabbits Eat Microgreens?](https://microgreensguru.com/microgreens-for-animals/rabbits/): Measured by weight, not percentage: half a cup to a cup of greens per 2 lb of rabbit, on top of unlimited hay. And the alfalfa question everyone gets wrong by analogy.
- [Can Tortoises and Turtles Eat Microgreens?](https://microgreensguru.com/microgreens-for-animals/tortoises-and-turtles/): A sulcata and a box turtle cannot share an answer: one is a fiber-fermenting grazer, the other is half carnivore. And a microgreen is close to the opposite of what a grazing tortoise is built for.
