AeroGarden Farm Review: Specs, Price and What It Grows

As read on September 26, 2026, AeroGarden's own store, which now lives on scottsmiraclegro.com, lists no Farm model at all, and a store search for "aerogarden farm" returns nothing. If you buy a Farm now, you are buying a used unit, a marketplace listing or leftover retail stock. Between the two models people compare most, the Farm 24 Plus and the Farm 24 Basic, the only difference is how tall your plants can grow: up to 24 inches on the Plus against up to 12 on the Basic. And while a Farm grows lettuce, herbs and fruiting plants well in its pods, AeroGarden never made a microgreens kit for it, so a dense microgreens crop means working around the design.

All five have a touchscreen, Wi-Fi with a phone app, and a vacation mode. The Farm 24 Basic page notes that the Wi-Fi needs a 2.4 GHz connection. The Farm 12 grows to 24 inches, not 12; the name counts pods, not inches. And the "24" in the Farm 24 models is also a pod count, so the Farm 24 Basic, with its 12-inch ceiling, is the shortest unit in the family.

For water, the Farm 12 quick planting guide says to add 2 gallons, and AeroGarden answered on the Farm 12XL page (July 3, 2024) that its bowl holds 32 cups. The Farm 24 guide says to add 2 gallons beside a drawing with two water ports, one grow bowl per side, but it does not print a total, so fill each side to its own mark rather than working from a single figure.

What the Farm 24 Plus adds over the Farm 24 Basic

The Plus buys you about 12 more inches of growing room and nothing else. On the maker's spec tables the two share 24 pods, two electronically adjustable 60 W panels, the touchscreen, Wi-Fi, the app, low water and plant food alerts, dimmable automatic lights and vacation mode. One Farm 24 guide covers both models, with the same water fill and the same 1.1 amp nameplate. The Plus stands 34 inches tall against the Basic's 24, and both take up the same 36 by 14 inches of counter or shelf.

That makes the choice a question of what you plan to grow. Lettuce, salad greens and most herbs stay well under 12 inches when you keep harvesting them, which is exactly what the Basic suits. Tomatoes, peppers and anything you want to let run tall are where the extra height earns its money. Two owners in an October 2024 Reddit thread put it from both sides: one found the Basic's "12 inch growing height" a "tough sell", while another uses the Plus for peppers and called the Basic "really, really good as a tomato farm". Those are two people's experience, not a rule, but they show the height matters most for fruiting crops.

If microgreens are your main crop, the extra height is money spent on space you will never use. A microgreens harvest is a few inches tall.

Can you still buy a Farm new?

Not from AeroGarden. The dated trail runs like this. AeroGarden's closing email, in a copy an owner posted in autumn 2024, announced the company would close effective January 1, 2025, with aerogarden.com sales running through October 7, 2024. By December 7, 2024 the Farm 24 Basic page showed "Out Of Stock". Then in July 2025 the brand was back: the homepage on July 9, 2025 announced "Farm 24 Basic is BACK! Limited Stock", and the Farm 12XL page on July 29, 2025 had an "Add to Cart" button at $349.95. By September 15, 2025 the 12XL showed "Out Of Stock". The homepage had no Farm on December 11, 2025, and since February 1, 2026 aerogarden.com has redirected to the Scotts Miracle-Gro site, where no Farm is listed.

AeroGarden has not published a notice saying the Farm line is discontinued, so the accurate description is that it is no longer listed. The AeroGarden manuals page still links the Farm 12, Farm 12XL and Farm 24 assembly and planting guides, which is useful if you buy a used unit without its paperwork. What the maker does not say anywhere is whether it still repairs Farms or sells their parts, so if you are buying used, assume you will be sourcing parts yourself. What a Farm costs to buy now

With no current list price, the only prices you will find are other people's asking prices, and they have swung widely. In the October 2024 Reddit thread, one owner said a Farm 24 Basic was going on Amazon "for $700", while others reported paying $197 with an emailed discount code and $215 for a Farm 24 Basic with a stacking kit.

Use the maker's last list prices in the table above as a ceiling. Paying more than AeroGarden itself last asked, for a unit that may be several years old and carries no warranty, is hard to justify. For how Farm prices sit against the smaller AeroGardens, see how much an AeroGarden costs.

What it costs to run

AeroGarden publishes no energy figure for the Farm, and the planting guides let you set the light hours yourself without printing a default. So, the way to estimate your cost is to do the arithmetic with your own settings and your own electricity rate. The example below uses a 16-hour light day, which is an assumption, not a maker figure.

A Farm 24 runs two 60 W panels, 120 W in all. At the U.S. average residential price of 18.31 cents per kWh for July 2026, from the EIA's Electric Power Monthly:

120 W ÷ 1,000 × 16 hours × $0.1831 = about $0.35 per day

That is about $10.55 per 30 days and $128.32 per year, for the lights alone, before the pump and taxes. A Farm 12 or 12XL has one 60 W panel, so the same arithmetic gives half that, roughly $5.27 per 30 days. The nameplates (120 V, 1.1 A for the Farm 24 models, 0.56 A for the Farm 12 models) are maximum ratings, not measured use. Swap in the hours your unit is actually set to and the rate on your own bill, and you have your figure.

Plant food is the other steady cost. Every Farm shipped with liquid plant food, and the guide sets a plant food alert every 14 days. On September 26, 2026 the Scotts AeroGarden accessories page listed a 3 oz bottle, sold as one season's worth, at $11.99, and a 5-pack at $50.95. Seed pods are extra if you use AeroGarden's: a 6-pod Heirloom Salad Greens kit was $16.95 in August 2025, and on September 26, 2026 Walmart showed a 9-pod Grow Anything kit from $17.99.

The warranty, and what voids it

The current AeroGrow limited warranty, effective September 30, 2025, gives one year from purchase (from delivery in California) on AeroGarden products bought from an authorized seller, excluding seed kits and accessories. AeroGrow chooses the remedy: repair, replacement with a new or refurbished unit, or a refund. It excludes products bought from unauthorized sellers, and it excludes damage caused by "unauthorized parts or attachments, such as non-AeroGrow seed pods."

Two points follow for a Farm buyer. A used unit from a private seller or an unauthorized marketplace seller is outside the warranty. And if you grow your own seeds in third-party pods or baskets and something is damaged, that damage claim can be refused, so keep AeroGrow pods in the unit while you are still inside the warranty window if coverage matters to you.

Gardens bought during the 2024 wind-down may have shorter cover. The closing email, as reproduced by an owner, said that all AeroGarden gardens bought on or after November 1, 2024 would carry a 90-day limited warranty in place of the one-year terms in the manual. Nothing published says which terms applied to the July 2025 Farm 24 Basic restock, so if you bought one then, keep your receipt and ask AeroGrow support directly.

Will a Farm grow microgreens?

It can, but it was never designed for them, and you will be improvising. AeroGarden sold microgreens kits for its Harvest and Bounty gardens: its MicroGreens category in October 2023 listed a "Microgreens Kit for Harvest Gardens" and a "Microgreens Kit for Bounty Gardens", plus felt grow media and seed packets for them. There was never a Farm kit, and on September 26, 2026 a store search for "microgreens" returned no microgreens kit, tray or mat of any kind.

That leaves owner workarounds, such as sowing seed into pod baskets or sponges. The limitation is the deck. A Farm's pods are planting holes, not a sowing surface, and AeroGarden never published the plantable area of the deck. For scale, a standard 10 by 20 inch tray gives you 200 square inches to sow, while the whole outside footprint of a Farm 24 is 14 by 36 inches, 504 square inches, and a Farm 12 is half that. Much of that footprint is frame, reservoir opening and space between pods, so do not count on anything near a tray's worth of microgreens. No one has published an independent light reading at the Farm's growing surface either, so judge the light by the crop itself. Sow a small test batch, watch how it grows against a tray under the light you already use, and decide from that before you commit seed to a whole deck.

The Farm owners who describe their growing mostly grow leafy greens and herbs. One owner running a Farm 24 Basic stacked on a Farm 24XL wrote in February 2022 that planting every pod "results in a jungle up top and root mess in the tank", so they plant "One pod per 3" and add lettuce in waves, three plants and then three more 14 days later at feeding time. That spacing advice is about full-size greens, and it is the opposite of how microgreens are grown. Problems owners have reported

Each of these is one owner's report, with its date and model, from reviews on AeroGarden's own product pages and owner forums. They show what can go wrong. They do not show how often it does.

  • Pump and screen: a Farm 12XL owner wrote "Pump failed, screen failed right out of the box" (bought February 24, 2021, reviewed March 18, 2021). A Farm 24XL owner reported a unit "not even two weeks old" with a dead display and "no lights nor water being pumped" (August 29, 2019).
  • Lights and power: a Farm 24XL owner could not lower one light from the touchscreen and found the replacement hood out of stock (February 1, 2021). Another reported a power supply housing fault that shut the light off (December 30, 2018). A Farm 12XL owner found the display "black with no lights" a little over a year after buying (May 17, 2023).
  • App: a Farm 24 Plus buyer wrote "The app doesn't want to work for raising and lowering the lights" (November 27, 2019). A Farm Plus owner could not change the "Days Planted" count after 15 months (January 7, 2022).
  • Crowding and roots: the February 2022 owner above, whose fully planted Farm grew a root mess in the tank.
  • Algae: AeroGarden's own answer on the Farm 24 Plus page says algae "sometimes develop in any hydroponic garden", in the water bowl or around the edges of the holes.

The most recent pump price on record is AeroGrow's own answer on Best Buy, from about 2022: $12.95, or $10.36 with its online discount code. On September 26, 2026 a store search for "aerogarden pump" found none. If you are buying used, ask the seller to show the pump running and both lights moving up and down before you hand over any money.

Which Farm makes sense, if any

If you grow lettuce, salad greens and herbs and keep them cut, the Farm 24 Basic does everything the Plus does at the lower height those crops need. If you want peppers or tomatoes, the Plus or the 24XL gives them room. If counter space is tight, the Farm 12 has the Plus's 24-inch ceiling in half the width. Whichever you pick, you are buying outside the maker's store, so check the unit in person, get the planting guide from the manuals page, and treat any repair as your own job.

If microgreens are what you actually want to grow, a Farm is an expensive way to get them. A flat 1020 tray under a shop-style grow light gives you a known sowing area, and none of the Farm's height or pod count helps a crop you cut at a few inches.

FAQ

Is the AeroGarden Farm 24 Plus worth it over the Basic? Only if you will grow plants taller than 12 inches. The Plus adds about 12 inches of grow height and stands 34 inches tall against the Basic's 24; the pods, lights and controls are the same. For greens and herbs, the Basic's ceiling is enough.

Does the warranty transfer to a used Farm? The current terms cover products bought from an authorized seller, and run from the original purchase date, so a unit from a private seller falls outside them. Gardens bought on or after November 1, 2024 were announced at 90 days rather than a year, so check the purchase date on any receipt the seller can show.

Can I use my own seeds in a Farm? You can, in pod baskets or sponges, but the current warranty excludes damage from non-AeroGrow seed pods. If your unit is still covered, consider the chance of a refused claim before switching; see using your own seeds in an AeroGarden.

Where can I get Farm manuals now? The AeroGarden manuals page on scottsmiraclegro.com still links the Farm 12, Farm 12XL and Farm 24 assembly and quick planting guides, as of September 26, 2026.

A Farm is a well-specified machine for greens and fruiting plants, sold now only secondhand, with a one-year warranty that a used buyer usually will not have. Buy it for the crops it was built for, check it runs before you pay, and grow your microgreens on a tray.
