Microgreens for Babies and Children: The Only Sources With an Age Are Selling Them

No pediatric body, no US federal agency and no extension service gives a starting age for feeding microgreens to a baby. Not the CDC, not the FDA, not the American Academy of Pediatrics. They cover vegetables, raw produce, leafy greens and sprouts at length, and microgreens as an infant food are simply absent.
The only sources that name an age are two commercial pages, and they disagree by up to a year.

The two ages on offer, and who is offering them

One says cooked microgreens can start at six months. The other says nothing before twelve to eighteen. That is a gap of up to a year at the very start of complementary feeding, and neither supplies a pediatric citation for its rule. The seller's stated basis is an unsupported claim about digestive readiness, essential oils and fiber.
These are competing commercial rules, not a disagreement between pediatric authorities. No authority has entered the argument.
What the pediatric guidance actually establishes
Complementary foods begin at around six months, when the child is developmentally ready: able to sit with support, control the head and neck, swallow rather than push food back out, and bring objects to the mouth.
By seven to eight months, children can eat foods from the vegetable group. That guidance does not name leafy greens, and it does not name microgreens.
Texture progresses, from smooth mashed, pureed or strained food at about six months, to thicker and lumpier, then to finely chopped or ground as skills develop.
So the defensible statement is narrow and worth stating exactly: vegetables can enter complementary feeding at about six months if the child is ready, and no pediatric source establishes a separate microgreen age. General leafy-green advice covers texture and handling. It is not a published clearance of raw microgreens for a baby.
Two different risks, and the commercial pages only answer one
This is the most useful distinction on the page, and it gets collapsed constantly.
Choking and texture is a developmental question. Can this child manage this food in this form? A loose raw clump of greens is a different object from the same greens minced into a soft dish.
Foodborne pathogens is a contamination question, and it is age-defined rather than skill-defined. Federal guidance puts children under five in the elevated-risk group because of developing immune systems, lower stomach acid and small body size, which make illness and dehydration more consequential. The CDC reports that children under five are three times more likely to be hospitalized with Salmonella infection.
Both commercial pages above answer texture and acceptance. One treats raw greens as a choking issue for the 6 to 9 month band and moves toward minced raw as chewing develops; the other talks about digestion, fiber and flavor. Neither engages the under-five pathogen question at all.
And a child who can chew is not thereby a child whose immune system has caught up. The two timelines are not the same timeline.
Cooking is the step that addresses the pathogen side
The CDC's position on the under-five group is direct: washed and cooked vegetables are safest, and sprouts should be cooked until steaming hot.
Washing helps and does not finish the job. Federal produce guidance is explicit that washing lowers but does not eliminate bacteria, and post-harvest washing has real limits that extension guidance on microgreen production spells out.
One thing worth saying plainly, because it is a natural mistake. Mixing raw greens into a puree, yogurt, eggs or a smoothie is a common and sensible way to get a child to accept the flavor. It does not reduce pathogen risk. Blending is not a kill step. Cooking and then pureeing addresses both texture and pathogens; blending raw addresses only texture.
Heat also does not repair unsafe handling or remove a preformed toxin, so it is a step rather than a license.
Crops, where there is no child-specific list
No pediatric source publishes a list of good and bad microgreen crops for children. What can be said:
- Avoid any crop whose parent plant or seed is not established as edible food. Not every seedling is. A seller page cautions specifically against nightshade microgreens such as tomato, pepper, eggplant and potato because of solanine, and while a store page is not evidence, the underlying "not every seedling is edible" caution is sound.
- Avoid a crop the child has a relevant confirmed allergy to. Obvious and worth writing down.
- Pungent crops are a flavor problem, not a demonstrated hazard. Extension material identifies radish and arugula as spicy, which makes them poor first tastes rather than dangerous ones.
- Sellers converge on pea and sunflower as first crops because they call them mild, sweet and nutty. That is taste practice, and it is a reasonable place to start for exactly that reason.
How much, which is not established either
No pediatric or public-health source gives a microgreen quantity by age or body weight.
The only age-banded amounts anywhere are commercial: 1 to 2 teaspoons mixed into puree at 6 to 9 months, 1 to 2 tablespoons at 9 to 18 months, and a quarter cup at 18 months and up. Those are volumes, not weights, and volume is not a reliable gram figure across crops with very different leaf densities.
And there is no adult standard to scale down from. This site's own work on serving size found no regulator sets one; a seller page calls 20 g an adult healthy serving. You cannot validly convert one commercial volume into a fraction of another commercial weight, so the answer is not "a quarter of an adult serving". The answer is that it is not established.
Getting a child to actually eat them
This part has real evidence behind it, and it is not about microgreens. Pediatric guidance on fussy eating advises offering a new food alongside a food the child already likes, letting the child decide how much to eat, involving children in choosing and preparing food, and re-offering without pressure. It can take 15 to 20 tries for a child to like a food.
That reframes the whole question usefully. A rejected first taste is the normal beginning of the process rather than a verdict.
What to actually do
- Ask your pediatrician or health visitor, because no guidance body has answered this and your child's own history is the thing that matters.
- Follow the ordinary complementary-feeding timeline, not a microgreen-specific one, because no microgreen-specific one exists.
- Cook them for a child under five. Washed and cooked is the safest form of a vegetable for that age group, and cooking is the only step here that addresses pathogens.
- Do not treat blending as a safety measure. It solves texture and nothing else.
- Match the texture to the child's actual skill, finely chopped or stirred into a soft dish rather than a loose raw clump, and keep eating seated and supervised.
- Start with a mild crop such as pea or sunflower, and keep radish and arugula for later on flavor grounds.
- Use only crops whose parent plant is an established food. Skip nightshade seedlings.
- Handle it as raw produce until it is cooked, with refrigeration and washing, knowing washing reduces rather than removes.
- Expect repetition. Fifteen to twenty tries is the published figure for a new food.
What is still genuinely unknown
- Any microgreen starting age from a pediatric or public-health body. The single public-health page that names microgreens at all groups them with sprouts, and even there the do-not-eat-raw rule is written for sprouts.
- Any child portion by age or weight, in grams.
- A child-specific crop avoidance list, reviewed for toxicology and food safety.
- Whether raw microgreens carry a materially different pathogen risk from other raw leafy greens for this age group. The sprout evidence is not the microgreen evidence.
- Any pediatric study measuring intake, tolerance, nutrient contribution or displacement of other foods.
- Whether the commercial six-month or twelve-month rule is closer to right. Neither has anything behind it.
